The authors most important idea in this passage is in order to prepare for a reading you must understand the type of reading . This is important so that when you describe the passage you could refer to the reading with your own knowledge and experience. If you can not understand the reading how can you relate to it to describe the reading. So i think the author made a very important point in this passage.
